Kannst Du uns erst mal ein wenig über dich erzählen?
Mein Name ist Stephen und ich studiere Computer Science im Fernstudium. Ich bin erst vor kurzem auf ein Fernstudium umgestiegen – das ist viel flexibler und das gefällt mir sehr gut! Es ist einfacher, alles andere, was so anfällt, zu jonglieren und trotzdem Zeit zum Lernen zu finden. Und natürlich auch für das Schreiben von Prüfungen. In meiner Freizeit gehe ich gerne Tauchen und liebe das Motorradfahren. Und ganz passend zum Studienfach programmiere ich auch gerne.
Wie war Deine Erfahrung mit dem Oxford Certificate Programme?
Die ganze Erfahrung in Oxford hat viel Spaß gemacht. Es war schön, das ganze Erlebnispaket zu bekommen: Der Unterricht am Worcester College und das Networking mit anderen motivierten Studierenden. Als Student im Fernstudium treffe ich andere IU-Studierende normalerweise nicht persönlich – und es war etwas Besonderes, sich im vor Ort kennenzulernen.
Ich war außerdem genau in der Woche in Oxford als Queen Elisabeth II. verstorben ist und das war natürlich sehr präsent in den Köpfen und insgesamt. Man taucht so richtig in die Kultur und den Alltag dort ein – mit allen guten und schlechten Themen. Es ist also obendrein eine super interessante kulturelle Erfahrung.
Und wie sah Dein Tagesablauf in Oxford aus?
Der Tag war in zwei Hälften geteilt: Ein Teil war mit Unterricht und der andere mit Freizeiterlebnissen gefüllt. Wir haben Museen besucht, die Stadt Oxford besichtigt und waren punting auf dem Fluss. (A.d.R.: Ein Punt ist ein flaches Boot, das man mit einem langen Holzstock steuert.) Ich habe diese Ausflüge sehr genossen.
Die Studierenden waren in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt – je nach belegtem Kurs. Ich war Teil des Computer Science Kurses. Er war sehr praxisorientiert, und wir haben viel mit Daten gearbeitet und mit verschiedenen Dingen experimentiert. Wir hatten auch einen Dozenten aus Cambridge, der sehr leidenschaftlich bei seiner Arbeit war, was sich auch in seiner Art zu unterrichten gezeigt hat. Er wusste wahnsinnig viel zum Thema Datenanalyse und war begeistert für das Fach.
Hat das Programm Deiner Meinung nach eine nachhaltige Wirkung?
Wir hatten eine tolle Gruppe – mit sehr neugierigen und interessanten Leuten. Vor kurzem haben wir sogar eine Reunion in Göttingen organisiert. Es war wirklich schön, alle wiederzusehen und wir hatten viel Spaß gemeinsam. Aus sozialer Sicht hatte es also definitiv eine nachhaltige Wirkung.
Ich kann das Programm insgesamt wegen sowohl der sozialen Komponente, der Lernerfahrung und auch dem kulturellen Erlebnis wirklich empfehlen. Zu erleben, wie es ist ein Studierender an der Uni in Oxford zu sein war wirklich etwas Besonderes. Dazu kommen noch all die Veranstaltungen und Events wie die Begrüßungszeremonie oder das Abschiedsessen. Ein wirklich cooler Teil davon ist, dass man sich zurecht macht und dabei elegante Kleidung trägt. Dabei kann man auch toll networken.

Take courses at the world-renowned Worcester Collage in Oxford and get ahead in your self-development and your studies. What makes this programme extra special? Stephen tells us about his experiences with the programme last year.
Let’s start with an introduction. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Stephen and I’m studying Computer Science online at IU International University of Applied Sciences. I only recently switched to studying online – it’s a lot more flexible and I really like that! It’s easier to juggle other responsibilities and still get around to studying as well as eventually writing exams. I also enjoy scuba diving and motor cycling in my free time. And, very in line with my field of study, I also like coding.
How was your experience with the Oxford Certificate Programme?
The whole experience at Oxford was fun. It was nice to have the opportunity to experience the entire package: The classes at Worcester College and networking with other motivated students. As an online student, I don’t usually meet other IU students in person – and it was special to get to know each other in real life.
I was actually in Oxford the very week that the queen died and that was of course a huge topic the whole time. You get really immersed in the culture and the day-to-day there – with all topics good and bad. So it’s an interesting cultural experience on top of everything.
What were your days in Oxford like?
In general, the day was split in half: One part was filled with coursework and the other with leisure experiences. We visited museums, toured the city of Oxford and went punting on the river. (Editor’s note: A punt is a long boat with a flat bottom which you move along a river with the help of a long pole.) I really enjoyed these outings.
There were two groups that I know of. I was part of the student group taking the IT course. It was very practically oriented, and we spent most of the time working with the data we had or experimenting with different things. We worked on the coursework during the afternoons in a small group. We also had a lecturer from Cambridge who was extremely passionate about his work, which clearly showed in the way he taught. He was very immersed in the data analysing world and highly dedicated to his subject.
In your opinion, did the programme have a lasting effect?
We had an excellent group – with very curious and interesting people. Recently we even organised a reunion in Göttingen. It was really nice seeing everyone again and we had great fun reconnecting. So from a social standpoint, it definitely had a lasting impact.
I can really recommend the programme for the social connections, the learning experience and the cultural element too. The whole experience of seeing what it’s like to be a student at Oxford was really something else. Additionally, there are all the special events like the welcoming ceremony or the farewell dinner. A really cool part of it was the whole experience of suiting up and wearing fancy clothes. It’s basically networking over fancy food.
